Man Is Charged With Shotgun Murder

At Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday William George Purton-Henderson (25), unemployed and of no fixed address, made a one-minute appearance.

He was accused of the murder of Peter Vernon Wells, who was found with shotgun wounds at his home on Glossop road, South Croydon, the previous Wednesday.

Detective Chief Supt Eric Goddard applied for a week’s remand in custody and this was granted by the two-man Bench.

Purton-Henderson was wearing a blue jacket and trousers, and open-neck light blue shirt.

The inquest was opened on the same day, when Mr Raymond Sandover, of Rectory Park, Sanderstead, gave evidence of identification.

Mr Sandover, a company director, was said to be a family friend.

The hearing was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
